TRANSLATION METHODS FOR WOMEN’S LANGUAGE FEATURES OF THE MAIN CHARACTER SELF MADE

This research explores the use of women’s features in the main character’s dialogue in the mini-series Self Made, using Robin Lakoff’s theory as a framework. This research also examines how these features are translated from English to Indonesian, based on Peter Newmark’s translation methods. This research uses a decrisptive qualitative research method. A total of 121 data of women’s language features were identified in the character's utterances. These features consisting of 43 data of lexical hedges or fillers, 4 data tag questions, 24 data of rising intonation, 15 data empty adjectives, 13 data intensifiers, one datum of hypercorrect grammar, 13 data of superpolite forms, 2 data of avoidance of strong swear words, and 6 data of emphatic stress. Among these, lexical hedges or fillers were the most dominant. This research also identified six translation methods applied to these features: 1 datum of word-for-word translation, 2 data of literal translation, 51 data of faithful translation, 2 data of semantic translation, 36 data of free translation, and 5 data of communicative translation. The feature of rising intonation was found to be untranslatable
